Fighting Food Insecurity: CCSO Food Bank Brings Its Mission to Brooklyn

Founded in 2020 by Evelyn Heilbron, Community Center Services Organization (CCSO) was established to fight hunger and ensure that those in need receive resources with dignity. For the last five years, this volunteer-driven nonprofit has provided food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other essential resources to neighbors in Queens. Since 2023, CCSO has been based in Elmhurst and operates out of a facility on Corona Avenue that was donated by Broadway Stages. With five years of experience and success under her belt, Heilbron is now taking CCSO, also known as the Corona Food Bank, to Brooklyn! 

Inspiration and a Promise 

Heilbron was inspired to form CCSO in 2020 following her young son’s stroke, which left him nearly blind. Throughout her family’s painful struggle, she has found strength in keeping her promise to dedicate herself to giving back. "This organization has been inspired by children who want and deserve a better world and a better life," said Heilbron.

Broadway Stages and CCSO: A Powerful Partnership Tackling Food Insecurity

In 2023, Broadway Stages provided a 4,200-square-foot facility under a no-cost lease valued at over $210,000 a year. This space allows CCSO to serve those in the community who are in need. Under the leadership of Heilbron and the generosity of a team of incredible volunteers, the Food Bank of Corona offers the community hot meals, food, clothing, and a variety of services and classes seven days a week.  

  • Monday [9 a.m. to 12 p.m.]: Informative Resources on Immigration and Free Medical Insurance 

  • Tuesday [9 a.m. to 2 p.m.]:  Clothing Distribution

  • Wednesday [9 a.m. to 3 p.m.]: Food Pantry, Hot Food and Clothing Distribution

  • Thursday [5 p.m. to 7 p.m.]: Food Nutrition Program

  • Friday [9 a.m. to 3 p.m.]:  Food Pantry, Hot Food and Clothing Distribution

  • Saturday [9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.]:  Zumba Class and [2 p.m. to 4 p.m.]: Art Classes for Children 

  • Sunday [2 p.m. to 4 p.m.]: English Class for Adults

  • OPEN EVERY DAY [9 a.m. to 4 p.m.]: Community Library - Free Books for Children and Adults

Expanding Hunger Relief from Queens to Brooklyn

CCSO receives food resources from the Food Bank for NYC, among other organizations. Food Bank For New York City is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization with a mission to empower every New Yorker to achieve food security for good. Impressed by the leadership and impact of CCSO, they reached out to Heilbron to become one of their Brooklyn-based mobile pantry and pop-up distribution groups that include over a dozen locations across the City. Heilbron jumped at the chance, and with the help of Broadway Stages and the office of Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, she now adds a second mobile pantry distribution location under the name Zero Hunger (“No Hambre” in Spanish). This monthly distribution, strategically located in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn, will serve up to 300 families. The food giveaway will be held the second Saturday of each month beginning June 14, from 12 to 2 p.m. (while supplies last). Neighbors in need are encouraged to attend and bring shopping carts and/or reusable bags. No identification is necessary. The event will take place at the Seth Low Playground, located at P, Bay Parkway, West 12th Street Avenue, Stillwell Avenue, Brooklyn, 11205.

Food Insecurity - Addressing the Need in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn

Last December, THE CITY reported that food insecurity affects 1.9 million New Yorkers. This is up 76% since 2021, with 1 in 6 households with children lacking enough to eat, and is higher than the 55% increase seen nationwide. Food insecurity is defined as not having enough to eat at least some of the time.  

According to a Hunter College New York City Food Policy Center report, approximately 14.5% of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, residents experience food insecurity, which is noticeably higher than the New York City average. The website Census Reporter states that Bensonhurst has a per capita income of $30,978, significantly below the city average of $48,847. In addition, this neighborhood faces a meal gap of nearly 5 million meals annually. This means the population here is collectively missing out on approximately 5 million meals each year due to a lack of access to food due to poverty, a lack of nearby grocery stores, or other barriers. 

CCSO -- From Food to Books: Building Community with Dignity and Care

CCSO's mission is to work endlessly to ensure the people in the community live with good health and dignity. In addition to distributing food, CCSO has also established the Paul Library at the Corona Ave. facility. The project got its start when its namesake, Paul Ciafone, decided to start collecting and donating books to the CCSO Food Bank. Paul is the son of Broadway Stages President and CEO Gina Argento.

The library provides a safe and welcoming space for children and adults to read and access educational resources. The library houses over 3,000+ books in both English and Spanish. "There are no bookstores in this neighborhood of Corona, so we've created a welcoming, family-friendly space where the community can come and enjoy reading," Evelyn Heilbron told QueensLatino.com.

CCSO hosts special events throughout the year to create a celebratory community atomsphere. From Valentines Day and Easter, to Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, there is always something extra going on at the Food Bank of Corona. Their 2024 Back to School event served almost 2,000 people who received clothes, shoes, hot food, school supplies, and toys. Broadway Stages donated 500 backpacks and a variety of school supplies for the event. And our clients also support CCSO with donations from local film and television productions which provide gently used clothing and other items. There is an opportunity to give each day and for every season.

This set is a fictional or conceptual aircraft layout with three seats on either side of a central aisle, resembling a standard narrow-body jet. While not a standard model, it evokes realistic commercial aviation with expanded passenger space.

This Boeing 747 converted into a private jet offers opulence on a grand scale, including bedrooms, lounges, offices, and even dining spce. Due to its sheer size and customization potential, it is perfect for scenes depicting royalty, heads of state, or ultra-high-net-worth individuals.

  • LearJet:

LearJet is a brand of sleek, mid-sized business jets known for their speed and agility. Originally developed by Bill Lear in the 1960s, it's a staple in private aviation, appropriate for scenes depicting executives and celebrities for short to mid-range flights.

From Peacock to Prime: Discover What's Filming at Broadway Stages

As summer nears, Broadway Stages has several projects that are finally coming to a streaming service near you. We know how much hard work goes into creating these productions, and we are always excited to see the final product. Read on to find out more about what's filming and what's coming out this month.

"Poker Face" Is Back

After a two-year absence, Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) is back driving across the country and solving murder mysteries along the way thanks to her innate ability to detect when someone is lying. Last week, Peacock dropped three new episodes of its hit case-of-the-week series "Poker Face," and a new episode will drop each week through July 12.

When fans saw Charlie at the end of the first season, she was facing a tough decision – work for mob queenpin Beatrix Hasp (Rhea Perlman) and her crime syndicate or go back on the run.

Since Charlie is always on the move, and murder seems to follow her everywhere she goes, each episode includes one or more special guest stars. Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo ("Wicked") guest starred in the season premiere titled "The Game Is a Foot," directed by series creator Rian Johnson ("Knives Out"). She played identical quintuplets with distinct personalities and styles. Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad") and Katie Holmes ("Dawson's Creek") helmed the second episode titled "Last Looks," while the third titled "Whack-A-Mole" featured Richard Kind ("Spin City"), comedian John Mulaney, and Simon Helberg ("The Big Bang Theory") returning as FBI agent Luca Clark.

In coming episodes, viewers will also see Awkwafina, Sherry Cola, John Cho, Davionte "GaTa" Ganter, David Alan Grier, Patti Harrison, Corey Hawkins, Gaby Hoffmann, Carol Kane, David Krumholtz, Natasha Leggero, Melanie Lynskey, Ben Marshall, Margo Martindale, Adrienne C. Moore, Kumail Nanjiani, Kathrine Narducci, B.J. We don't know all the places Charlie will go this season, but we are happy to be the production studio company-of-choice for the hit series and are thrilled to see our Greenpoint facilities on the show.

Viewers and critics alike enjoyed the 10-episode first season, and the murder mystery show is one of Peacock's most-watched original series. In its first season, "Poker Face" garnered four Emmy nominations, and guest star Judith Light won for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Lyonne also scored Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards nods.

In a shift from the first season, Tony Tost has taken over showrunner duties from Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The sisters remain on board as executive producers alongside series creator Johnson.

Crime Thriller "The Better Sister" Coming to Prime Video on May 29

Jessica Biel and Elizabeth Banks star in the Prime Video original crime series "The Better Sister," based on the novel of the same name by Alafair Burke. All eight episodes will drop on the streaming service on Thursday, May 29.

Biel plays Chloe, a wealthy media executive whose life is seemingly perfect. She is married to a respected lawyer named Adam (Corey Stoll), and the two share a teenage son Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan). Banks plays her estranged sister Nicky who can barely get by and struggles to stay clean. When Adam is brutally murdered, the sisters reunite to figure out the truth behind his tragic death.

Co-starring alongside Biel and Banks are Gloria Reuben ("Elsbeth") as the outspoken lawyer Michelle Sanders and Lorraine Toussaint ("The Equalizer") as the influential publisher Catherine Lancaster, who is Chloe's boss. Kim Dickens ("Deadwood") and Bobby Naderi ("Prison Break") play detectives Nancy Guidry and Matt Bowen, who are investigating Adam's murder. Gabriel Sloyer ("Inventing Anna") plays Jake Rodriguez, a colleague and friend of Adam's, and Matthew Modine ("Stranger Things") plays Bill Braddock, the law firm's commanding founding partner.

In the director's chair is Craig Gillespie, known for directing several episodes of the miniseries "Pam & Tommy" (2022) as well as the films "Cruella" (2021), "I, Tonya" (2017), and "Lars and the Real Girl" (2007).

"And Just Like That…" Returning to Max on May 29

After nearly two years of anticipation, Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda are finally coming back. On Thursday, May 29, the third season of "And Just Like That…" will debut on HBO's streaming platform Max.

Season two of the "Sex and the City" reboot ended on a bittersweet note, as Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) threw one last dinner party in her longtime Upper East Side apartment. Following another split from Aidan (John Corbett), Carrie ended the season living all alone in a large townhouse in Gramercy Park.

In casting news, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon will of course be returning as Carrie's BFFs Charlotte and Miranda. Corbett will also return, suggesting that Carrie and Aidan won't be separated for very long. However, Rosemarie DeWitt will also be returning as Aidan's ex-wife, Kathy.

Mario Cantone will be back as Charlotte's friend Anthony, and Sebastiano Pigazzi, who plays his boyfriend Giuseppe, has been bumped up to a series regular. Broadway legend Patti LuPone will appear in two episodes as Giuseppe's mother (and Anthony's archnemesis).

Sarita Choudhury, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, and Nicole Ari Parker will also return for the upcoming season. Additionally, Dolly Wells, who plays Miranda's colleague and potential love interest Joy, will be elevated to a series regular.

Mehcad Brooks, Jonathan Cake, and Logan Marshall-Green will join the cast as recurring guest stars, while comedic actresses Cheri Oteri, Rosie O'Donnell, and Kristen Schaal will appear in undisclosed roles. Additionally, Ella Stiller (daughter of Ben and granddaughter of Jerry) will appear in an undisclosed role. Her grandmother, Anne Meara, appeared in four episodes of the original series as Miranda's mother-in-law Mary Brady.

Karen Pittman, who played Columbia Law professor Nya Wallace, and Sara Ramírez, who played comedian Che Diaz, are not returning.

Sofia Carson Has Another Netflix Hit With "The Life List"

Sofia Carson has found her niche in Netflix original films. The Disney Channel alum co-starred in last year's well-received action thriller "Carry-On," and now she stars in "The Life List," a romantic dramedy based on Lori Nelson Spielman's 2013 novel of the same name.

The film debuted on Netflix on March 28 and was an immediate hit. More than 60 million viewers tuned in during its first two weeks of release, and it topped the Netflix English-language film streaming list for several weeks.

In "The Life List," Carson stars as Alex Rose, a woman whose mother's death inspires her to complete a bucket list she put together 20 years earlier as a teenager. Will she finally fall in love and go to Paris? Or will this journey take her somewhere else?

Connie Britton ("The White Lotus") co-stars as Alex's late mother, while Kyle Allen ("American Horror Story") plays her lawyer and love interest Brad.

Carson's partnership with Netflix began in 2022 with the popular romantic drama "Purple Hearts." Her next Netflix original, "Carry-On," held the top spot on Netflix for four consecutive weeks and ​garnered more than 170 million views, making it Netflix's second most-watched original film ever.

Carson has another Netflix film, "My Oxford Year," set for release on August 1. She additionally served as an executive producer for the film.

CBS Cancels "The Equalizer"

We are sad to report that "The Equalizer," which has filmed at our facilities since its debut in 2021, will be ending after five seasons. The series finale, titled "Decisions," aired on May 4, and longtime fans finally found out if Robyn (Queen Latifah) and Dante (Tory Kittles) would live happily ever after. This is a spoiler-free zone, so you'll have to watch the finale to find out.

CBS has also scratched plans for a spinoff series that was set to star Titus Welliver and Juani Feliz. The two appeared as father and daughter Elijah and Samantha Reed in an April episode that was meant to serve as a "backdoor pilot" for the planned series.

"The Equalizer" is a remake of the 1980s television show of the same name, which also spun off a successful film series starring Denzel Washington. The final season brought back Latifah as former CIA Operative Robyn McCall, Kittles as NYPD detective Marcus Dante, Adam Goldberg as hacker Harry Keshegian, Liza Lapira as Robyn's longtime friend Mel Bayani, Laya DeLeon Hayes as Robyn's teen daughter Delilah, and Lorraine Toussaint as Robyn's Aunt Viola.

  • Eagle Street Rooftop Farm: New York City's first fully operational organic rooftop farm, promoting urban agriculture and environmental education.

  • Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof and Community Engagement Center: A 24,000-square-foot green roof habitat for native birds and pollinators, serving as both an ecological sanctuary and an educational resource.​

  • Broadway Stages Green Corridor: An ongoing project aiming to expand green rooftop infrastructure, enhancing ecosystem services and community engagement.​ Currently we have a total of 50,000 + square feet of green rooftop gardens across our facilities in Brooklyn. 

In addition to these green garden rooftops, we have made a significant investment in solar panels across several of our facilities. As our founder, Tony Argento, told WNBC, "The motion picture industry is such a large user of electricity for its soundstage shooting and diesel fuel for its location filming. The solar panel installation is our contribution to improve our neighborhood and help offset our carbon footprint." 

The Power of the Sun: Our Solar Panel Initiative

In 2010, Broadway Stages installed 50,000 square feet of photovoltaic solar panels across five of Broadway Stages' soundstage buildings in Brooklyn. The solar panels were installed and continue to be maintained by Solar Energy Systems (SES), a Brooklyn-based solar design and installation company specializing in commercial and industrial photovoltaic (PV) systems.

A trendsetter in these efforts, our project marked the first significant solar energy initiative by a New York-based film and television production company and is one of the largest privately owned solar arrays in New York City.

Our solar panel system has a capacity of 1.6 megawatts (MW) and generates approximately 1.2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually. This amount of electricity offsets about one-third of the total electricity consumption across all of Broadway Stages' facilities. The system also helps ensure a more reliable and sustainable power supply for the company's high-energy production operations.

When installed, the system was estimated to avoid burning approximately 75,000 gallons of diesel fuel each year. The company significantly lowers its greenhouse gas emissions by reducing fuel consumption and contributes to cleaner air in its surrounding communities.

City Councilman Jim Gennaro, chairman of the Council's Committee on Environmental Protection, Resiliency & Waterfronts, told WNBC, "I applaud Broadway Stages for becoming the first solar-powered soundstage in the world…. Their initiative is a shining example of renewable energy investment and its various benefits — including the creation of green-collar jobs and growth of the local green economy."

Preparing for the Future: Energy Storage Innovation

As early adopters of green infrastructure and renewable energy projects, we are able to utilize our soundstages in a way that benefits our operations, the environment, and our community. And our interest in renewable energy continues with an energy storage pilot program that is in its development stage. Energy storage systems allow electricity to be stored — and then discharged — at the most strategic times. Once online, this energy storage system will allow us to reduce energy costs and our carbon footprint at the same time, while also helping to increase power grid reliability. Energy storage systems can offer these benefits for several reasons.

  • Balancing Supply and Demand:

Energy storage helps balance fluctuations between energy supply and demand. Renewable energy sources don't always generate electricity when it's needed. Energy storage can "smooth out" these fluctuations and release renewable energy when production is low.

  • Integration of Renewable Energy:

Energy storage is key to integrating renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydro) into the grid. This makes renewable energy more reliable and feasible on a larger scale.

  • Grid Stability and Reliability:

During power outages or a surge in demand, energy storage systems can provide backup power, preventing blackouts and grid instability.

  • Cost Savings and Efficiency:

Energy storage can reduce electricity costs by enabling users to store energy during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper and use it during peak hours when electricity is more expensive. 

  • Environmental Impact:

Energy storage reduces reliance on fossil fuels by enabling greater use of renewable energy. This helps decrease carbon emissions and pollution, contributing to a cleaner environment.

  • Energy Independence:

Energy storage allows for greater energy independence for both individuals and businesses. Those with solar systems and energy storage rely less on the grid, reducing vulnerability to rising energy prices or power outages.

From Stage to Screen: Broadway Stages Powers “Marty Supreme” Filming at Historic NYC Landmark

In this edition, we follow the crew of the upcoming Timothée Chalamet film “Marty Supreme” to the Columbus Citizens Foundation.

The upcoming film "Marty Supreme” is inspired by the life of professional table tennis player Marty Reisman. Starring Timothée Chalamet, the film aims to highlight the unique culture and challenges surrounding the sport of ping pong. ​The filmmakers needed authentic locations that fit the film's visual and emotional needs. With this in mind, Broadway Stages was happy to see that they chose the Columbus Citizens Foundation (CCF), among their on-location filming venues.

Headquartered on East 69th Street, the CCF exudes old-world charm with its stately façade featuring ornate details, marble accents, and large, arched windows typical of the Beaux-Arts architectural style popular in the early 20th century. However, the CCF is much more than this. It is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Italian-American heritage and culture through educational programs, charitable initiatives, and community events.

Inside the Columbus Citizens Foundation: A Landmark of Italian-American Heritage

Before its official founding in 1944, the Columbus Citizens Foundation existed as an informal group of Italian-American leaders in New York City dedicated to improving the image and standing of Italian Americans. The group helped organize the first Columbus Day Parade in 1929 and was instrumental in advocating for Columbus Day to become a national holiday, which was achieved in 1937. 

This led Judge S. Samuel Di Falco and Generoso Pope to formalize the group and officially establish the Columbus Citizens Committee in 1944. In 1982, it was renamed the Columbus Citizens Foundation. In 1967, it acquired its permanent headquarters at 8 East 69th Street.

Promoting Italian-American Culture: The Mission of the Columbus Citizens Foundation

The Foundation's mission is to foster appreciation of Italian-American heritage and achievement through philanthropic and cultural activities while providing opportunities for advancement to Italian-American students via scholarships and grants. The core objective of the Foundation is to preserve and promote Italian-American culture, traditions, and values.  It also aims to honor the legacy of Italian immigrants and their contributions to the United States. A key aspect of its mission is to support educational advancement for Italian-American students through scholarships and grants.

$40 Million in Scholarships: How the CCF Supports Italian-American Students

In addition to its multiple philanthropic initiatives and partnerships, it awards scholarships. Since 1984, the Columbus Citizens Foundation has awarded nearly $40 million in scholarships to students of Italian heritage who have demonstrated academic success and community involvement.

The Foundation offers various types of scholarships, including :

  • High School Scholarships: Financial aid awarded to academically talented Italian-American students attending private high schools.

  • College Scholarships: Support for Italian-American students pursuing undergraduate degrees at accredited colleges and universities.

  • Medical School Scholarships: Funding for students of Italian descent entering or enrolled in medical school.

  • Study Abroad Scholarships: Assistance for students looking to study in Italy, fostering a deeper connection to their cultural heritage.

  • First Responders Scholarship: Scholarships for children of Italian-American first responders, supporting families who serve their communities.

Cultural Celebrations and Scholarships: What the CCF Offers Its Community

The CCF also promotes classical and contemporary Italian culture, such as musical events featuring Italian and Italian-American artists. In addition, it often hosts educational events highlighting Italian-American history, literature, and prominent figures. But, by far, Columbus Celebration Weekend is the most festive (and busiest) time of the year. The agenda includes: 

  • Annual Gala: A prestigious evening featuring a silent auction, raffle, music, dancing, and fine dining.

  • Wreath Laying Ceremony: Held at Columbus Circle to honor the legacy of Christopher Columbus.

  • Columbus Day Mass: Conducted at St. Patrick's Cathedral, celebrating Italian-American heritage.

And, of course, it puts on the Annual Columbus Day Parade on Fifth Avenue. The Parade is the largest celebration of Italian-American heritage in the world. Featuring over 100 groups, including bands, floats, and Italian cultural organizations, the Parade draws nearly one million spectators and showcases Italian-American pride, history, and contributions to society. The Foundation consists of more than 600 members. Membership is by invitation only and requires sponsorship from two current members. The membership list boasts prominent individuals of Italian heritage from diverse fields such as law, medicine, government, business, education, and the arts. Meet the CCF Auxiliaries: Volunteers Powering Cultural and Charitable Events

You can support the Columbus Citizens Foundation (CCF) by becoming a member, making a tax-deductible donation, or sponsoring scholarships and events. Additionally, you can volunteer your time through auxiliary groups like the Ladies Auxiliary or Young Adults Auxiliary to help advance the Foundation's mission.

The Ladies Auxiliary is dedicated to supporting the Foundation's mission and activities. The Young Adults Auxiliary (YAA) is composed of young professionals, typically in their 20s and 30s, committed to supporting the CCF. Some of the ways they serve the CCF are:

Downtown Manhattan will host the 2025 Lower East Side Film Festival (LESFF) from May 1 - 5. The festival's mission is to champion bold, independent storytelling through immersive screenings, live Q&As, and dynamic community events, celebrating voices that break convention and embrace originality. 

The festival is a vital platform for emerging filmmakers, providing many with their first significant public exposure. LESFF is deeply community-driven, rooted in the Lower East Side's diverse, artistic, and inclusive identity, and it offers opportunities for both audiences and creators to connect. The festival focuses on bold, quirky, unconventional, and socially conscious films that might not be featured in larger, more commercial festivals. It provides an immersive experience combining film screenings with live performances, filmmaker receptions, parties, and unique community events hosted at multiple locations:

A Look Back: The History of the Lower East Side Film Festival

The Lower East Side Film Festival was founded in 2010 by a group of New York City-based independent filmmakers and artists as a platform to elevate underrepresented and unconventional voices in film. Over the years, LESFF has featured noteworthy films such as "The Big Sick” (before its Sundance acclaim in 2017) and "Thunder Road," which won a short film Grand Jury Prize before being expanded into a feature. "Catfish was screened early in its release, and this year, the festival will celebrate its 15th anniversary with a retrospective screening. Since its founding, the festival has grown from a small, single-venue indie showcase to a multi-day, multi-venue event that draws national attention.

2025 Lower East Side Film Festival: Feature Film Highlights

This year's headline feature films are: 

When a tick bites a restless young woman during a weekend camping trip, she begins to experience strange, transcendent visions that blur the line between nature, identity, and obsession in this surreal indie dramedy.

  • MARQUEE SPOTLIGHT: "For Worse” (Dir. Amy Landecker)

A newlywed couple's picture-perfect life unravels hilariously and heartbreakingly when an unexpected betrayal forces them to confront the messier, darker side of marriage in this sharp, dark comedy.

In this outrageous, gender-bending musical satire, a small-town drag king with big dreams shakes up the status quo after inheriting a scandalous family legacy, finding fame, love, and scandal along the way.

Two estranged siblings are reunited by a cryptic message from their late father, leading them on a nightmarish journey through a decaying family estate, where buried secrets and old grudges threaten to consume them.

Other featured films include "Micro-Budget," "Ali Eats America," "Battersea," and "Mad Bills to Pay" (or “Destiny, dile que no soy malo”).

Must-See Short Film Programs at LESFF 2025

The festival also includes several short film programs. Short films are valuable because they allow filmmakers to experiment with storytelling, style, and technique on a smaller, more manageable scale. They help emerging directors, writers, and producers learn how to work with budgets, crews, and audiences while honing their creative voices. Many successful filmmakers get their start with shorts, using them as calling cards to attract attention, funding, and opportunities for larger projects. On the slate this year:

In addition to the screenings, the festival will present an Opening Night Party on May 1 at Village East Cinema, featuring an open bar and live DJ. On May 2, a Filmmaker Reception will be held at Village East Cinema from 3 - 5 p.m. On May 4, DCTV's Firehouse Cinema hosts Nev Schulman for TRUE CRIME, TRUE BEGINNINGS: The Catfish 15-Year Retrospective, which will include a Q&A. Broadway Stages Hosts Production of Ryan Murphy’s Latest Series “The Beauty” for FX  

Ryan Murphy remains one of the busiest men in Hollywood these days. The writer, showrunner, director, and producer known for co-creating "American Horror Story," "Monsters," "Feud," and countless other shows currently has nine projects in various stages of development.

One of these upcoming projects is the series "The Beauty," which has been filming at our Greenpoint facility since last fall. Based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, "The Beauty" will be a sci-fi medical show about a sexually transmitted disease that turns people into their perfect selves — at least on the outside. Murphy told Variety that the series will be his take on "Ozempic Culture."

Co-created by Murphy and frequent collaborator Matthew Hodgson, the series will air on FX and consist of 10 episodes. Hodgson has written episodes of Murphy's "American Sports Story" (2024) and "9-1-1" (2018-2019), and he worked on 65 episodes of Murphy's hit show "Glee" (2011–2015) as a story editor and staff writer.

Speaking of frequent collaborators, Evan Peters is back for what will be his fourth project with Murphy. Peters appeared in nine seasons of Murphy's anthology series "American Horror Story" and starred in "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," winning a Golden Globe for his performance as the notorious serial killer. Peters also appeared in the first season of Murphy's groundbreaking series "Pose" (2018-2021), which filmed at our facilities.

Joining Peters in the cast is actress and filmmaker Rebecca Hall, who has dozens of television and film credits under her belt. She is well known for her performances in the romantic dramedy "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" (2008) and the crime thriller "The Town" (2011). She also received critical acclaim for directing and writing the historical drama "Passing" (2021). Ashton Kutcher, Isabella Rossellini, Anthony Ramos, and Jeremy Pope have also been announced as part of the cast. Supermodel-turned-actress Bella Hadid will also appear in the series; she has been spotted shooting scenes for "The Beauty" in Paris.

Broadway Stages is the production studio company of choice for another upcoming Murphy series, "American Love Story," which is currently in pre-production. Following the success of "American Crime Story" and "American Sports Story," the series will focus on John F. Kennedy Jr.'s courtship of and marriage to Carolyn Bessette as well as the tragic circumstances of their deaths. We also provided our facilities for Murphy's Emmy-award winning miniseries "Halston" (2021), which told the true story of the legendary mononymously known fashion designer.

Over the past year, Murphy has worked on projects as varied as Hulu's "Doctor Odyssey," FX's "Feud: Capote vs. The Swans," and Netflix's "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story." Other projects released over the past year include the eighth season of ABC's "9-1-1," the fifth and final season of Fox's spinoff "9-1-1: Lone Star," the first season of FX's "Grotesquerie," the 12th season of FX's highly successful anthology show "American Horror Story," the third season of its spinoff "American Horror Stories," and the aforementioned first season of FX's "American Sports Story."

Few details have been announced regarding "The Beauty," but the tagline for the six volumes of the graphic novels reads:

Modern society is obsessed with outward beauty. What if there was a way to guarantee you could become more and more beautiful every day? What if it was a sexually transmitted disease? In the world of “The Beauty,” physical perfection is attainable. The vast majority of the population has taken advantage of it, but Detectives Foster and Vaughn will soon discover it comes at a terrible price.

The cast has been spotted out and about in New York supporting local businesses. In January, the Westchester-based food truck Walter's Hot Dogs served the cast their signature fare. Walter's has catered to other Broadway Stages productions as well, such as “Blue Bloods” (including on star Tom Selleck's birthday), "Law & Order," "Billions," "The Equalizer," and the 2023 holiday film "Genie."

The Paley Honors Gala 2025: A Night of Recognition and Inspiration

One of the most anticipated and festive events in the media industry is the annual Paley Honors Gala. This year, on May 19, the Gala promises to be a celebration of excellence and innovation. ●        Joe Tsai is honored for his leadership role as the co-founder and chairman of Alibaba Group and as owner of the Brooklyn Nets (NBA) and New York Liberty (WNBA). Joe Tsai is also recognized for his work as an investor and board member of the Premier Lacrosse League and a founding board member of The Asian American Foundation (TAAF).

What Is Host on Howard? A New Design-Driven Experience in SoHo

Host on Howard is the brainchild of AvroKO, the globally renowned design firm behind some of the world's most visually arresting restaurants and hotels. Inside, visitors discover a curated collection of what AvroKO calls “tools for gathering.” These are not just physical objects, but elements that enhance the social experience, such as sculptural lighting, hospitality-grade furniture, elegant service trolleys, and more. Industry Organization | Behind the Lens: The American Society of Cinematographers and Its Impact on Film and TV

There are also organizations that serve as bridges between these varied parties, encouraging collaboration and mutual support. This week, we tell you about the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC).

Film and television are uniquely visual forms of storytelling. As such, the camera is fundamental to bringing the story to life. But the camera is just a tool, and just as a brush needs a painter and a pen needs an author, the camera needs a cinematographer. At Broadway Stages, we proudly offer the canvas where these artists craft the images that captivate us.

Since its founding in 1919, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has elevated cinematography from a technical craft to an essential visual art form. Its members are responsible for some of the most iconic imagery in film and television history. To be invited into the ASC is to be recognized at the highest level of one's profession. The ASC is one of the most prestigious institutions in the entertainment industry. But beyond prestige, the ASC plays a vital role in shaping how stories are told on screen.

American Society Of Cinematographers History

The ASC was born at a turning point in cinema. In 1919, two separate clubs, the Cinema Camera Club in New York and the Static Club in Los Angeles, merged to form a unified organization devoted to advancing motion picture photography. Founding members like Phil Rosen and Charles Rosher saw the need to establish cinematography as both a craft and an art form.

At the time, cinematographers were often seen merely as technicians. The ASC worked to change that perception, advocating for cinematographers to be considered equal creative collaborators alongside directors and writers. Over time, the ASC evolved with the industry while staying true to visual storytelling. They have pioneered advances from color film and widescreen formats to digital capture and virtual production.

What Does The ASC Do For Cinematographers

Today, the ASC is a professional organization and an educational resource. One of its most visible contributions is "American Cinematographer," a monthly magazine launched in 1920. The publication offers in-depth articles on how films and TV shows are shot, including interviews with cinematographers, technical breakdowns of lighting and camera setups, and commentary on emerging trends.

The ASC also hosts master classes, panels, and a mentorship program to educate the next generation of cinematographers. These programs cover both technical skills and industry navigation.

●        James Wong Howe, ASC

Howe was a groundbreaking Chinese-American cinematographer known for his innovative techniques, such as deep focus, low-key lighting, and dynamic camera movement. His vision defined classic films like "Hud," "Sweet Smell of Success," and "The Rose Tattoo." He was a two-time Academy Award winner and one of Hollywood's first and most influential cinematographers of color.

●        Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC

Zsigmond was an Oscar-winning Hungarian-American cinematographer renowned for his masterful use of natural light and composition in films like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," "The Deer Hunter," and "McCabe & Mrs. Miller." A key figure in the American New Wave, his work helped redefine the visual language of 1970s cinema.

●        Rachel Morrison, ASC

Morrison began her career working on series and TV movies for several networks. In 2018, Morrison became the first woman nominated for an Academy Award in Cinematography for "Mudbound.” She also brought a bold visual style to the Marvel universe with the film "Black Panther."

ASC Events And Awards In NYC

The ASC Awards is an annual celebration of outstanding achievement in cinematography across categories like feature film, episodic TV, and documentaries. Established in 1986, the awards are highly regarded within the industry and often serve as a precursor to the Academy Awards.

●        ASC Rising Stars of Cinematography celebrates emerging directors of photography and rewards them with prizes to further their careers.

Newtown Creek Alliance | Revitalizing Brooklyn’s Waterfront

Powerful Partnership: NCA and Broadway Stages Revitalize Newtown Creek

Broadway Stages isn't just a premier production studio company in New York City. We are also committed to be socially responsible. As early adopters of green infrastructure and renewable energy projects including Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof and Community Engagement Center, Eagle Street Rooftop Farm, and our solar panel rooftops that offset about one third of our annual electricity consumption, we are able to leverage our facilities in a way that not only benefits our operations, but also brings value to our community. This Green Corridor helps to enhance urban biodiversity, improve stormwater management, improve air quality, increase reliability of the power grid during peak demand, and provide community educational opportunities.

But we don’t do this alone. Indeed, we are part of an eco-focused cohort that offer expertise, passion, and skills that help us achieve our environmentally focused goals. 

Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA) is a valuable partner in our ongoing commitment to social responsibility and efforts to revitalize industrial land near Newtown Creek. Together, we are committed to sustainability, environmental health, and community enrichment. We have provided financial, in-kind, and logistical support to NCA in their efforts to restore ecological health throughout the Newtown Creek watershed. Their restoration projects include maintenance of street-end and open space sites, the planting and maintenance of intertidal projects including native salt marshes, and development and growth of the Newtown Native Nursery.

A shining example of our mutual commitment to sustainability is Kingsland Wildflowers at Broadway Stages. This initiative transformed a rooftop above our soundstage at 520 Kingsland Avenue into a 24,000-square-foot wildflower garden. NCA leads educational programming that includes field trips, tours, workshops, and events that connect the community to Newtown Creek's ecosystem. They also organize the annual Kingsland Wildflowers Festival and enhance the site's environmental impact by promoting sustainability and wildlife conservation. Newtown Creek Alliance: Restoring Newtown Creek Through Community Action

NCA is a community-based nonprofit organization founded in 2002, dedicated to the restoration, education, and revitalization of Newtown Creek — a 3.8-mile waterway forming the boundary between Brooklyn and Queens in New York City. ​Their mission and activities include:

●        Restoration: NCA works to remediate environmental hazards and advocates for ecological restoration projects, including green infrastructure and habitat rehabilitation.

●        Education: The organization offers educational programs such as field trips, workshops, and online resources to raise public awareness about the creek's history, ecology, and environmental challenges.

●        Community Engagement: NCA collaborates with local residents, businesses, and governmental agencies to promote public access, stewardship, and sustainable development along Newtown Creek. ​

Through these efforts, NCA aims to transform Newtown Creek into a healthier and more accessible waterway that benefits both the environment and surrounding communities.

Newtown Creek Alliance Earth Cam: Watch Positive Change Unfold

One of NCA's most recent efforts to engage the community in the resurrection of Newtown Creek is the Newtown Creek Alliance EarthCam, better known as the Creek Cam. A collaboration between NCA and EarthCam, the Creek Cam is a live-streaming webcam that provides real-time views of Newtown Creek.

Hosted creek-side at the Kingsland Wildflowers site, it offers educational value and allows viewers to observe waterway activity, wildlife, and the surrounding industrial landscape. It highlights activities such as marine traffic, industrial operations, waterfowl sightings, and recreational boating. We encourage you to engage with the creek and learn about its ecosystem with this new tool. Check it out today!

Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Storage Tunnel: A Key Step Toward Cleaner Water

NCA has been a longtime advocate for sewage reduction projects. These projects improve water quality, prevent the spread of waterborne illnesses, reduce the risks of flooding, and, most of all, ensure the long-term health of water ecosystems.

With this in mind, NCA was thrilled to learn that the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is constructing a CSO Storage Tunnel. This massive, multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project will bring much-needed relief and reduction to the repeated discharging of untreated sewage entering Newtown Creek during rain events.
