Inside Broadway Stages | What's Filming

As we move through the spring season, Broadway Stages' state of the art facilities are hosting exciting productions, coming soon to a screen near you. Read on to find out more about what's filming.

Peacock Announces Return Date for "Poker Face"

On May 8, the easygoing and uninhibited Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) will finally be back traveling across the country and using her preternatural lie-detection skills to put the bad guys away. Peacock will drop three episodes of the second season of its hit whodunit "Poker Face" that day and release a new episode over each of the following nine weeks.

It has been more than two years since Lyonne last graced our screens as Charlie, a former casino worker on the run from mob bosses. When fans last saw Charlie, she was on the run (again) after casino boss Cliff LeGrand (Benjamin Bratt) and mob queenpin Beatrix Hasp (voiced by Rhea Perlman) attempted to frame her for murder. Following Cliff's arrest by the FBI, Charlie had to decide whether to work for Beatrix and her crime syndicate or keep running.

While we don't know for sure which choice she will make, we do know that at some point in the new season Charlie will find herself in New York. We were happy to be the production studio company of choice for the popular series and can't wait to see how our facilities look on the show.

Charlie rarely stays in one place for long, and a new murder mystery awaits in each town she visits. This case-of-the-week format ensures that each episode includes a special guest star — usually playing either a murder victim or a murderer. We previously reported that the new season would employ the talents of dozens upon dozens of guest stars. Last month we reported that even more guest stars had been announced.

Peacock recently dropped first-look photos from the new season, showing Cynthia Erivo, John Mulaney, and Katie Holmes. Peacock also dropped a teaser trailer showing a slew of celebrity guests, including Giancarlo Esposito, Awkwafina, Cliff "Method Man" Smith, Justin Theroux, Taylor Schilling, Kumail Nanjiani, and Melanie Lynskey.

The list of guest stars goes on and on, with Sherry Cola, Kevin Corrigan, John Cho, Davionte "GaTa" Ganter, David Alan Grier, Patti Harrison, Corey Hawkins, Gaby Hoffmann, Carol Kane, Richard Kind, David Krumholtz, Natasha Leggero, Ben Marshall, Margo Martindale, Adrienne C. Moore, Katherine Narducci, B.J. Novak, Ego Nwodim, Haley Joel Osment, Simon Rex, Sam Richardson, Jason Ritter, Alia Shawkat, Lili Taylor, Lauren Tom, and Geraldine Viswanathan announced as guest stars. Additionally, Perlman will return in the new season as Beatrix, and Simon Helberg, who played FBI agent Luca Clark in the first season, will be returning as well.

Lyonne and series creator Rian Johnson were among the show's stars that participated in the recent "Poker Face" panel at PaleyFest LA. Cast members answered fan questions and shared a few details about the roles that some of the guest stars will be playing. Attendees also got an exclusive first look at the new season. Those of us who were not lucky enough to attend will just have to wait until May 9 to see where Charlie goes next.

Adaptation of Colleen Hoover's "Verity" Filming in New York

Anne Hathaway will play the bestselling novelist Verity Crawford in the latest big screen adaptation of a Colleen Hoover novel. "Verity" will be the second film adapted from one of Hoover's novels following last year's hit "It Ends With Us," which made more than $350 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of about $25 million.

Since being self-published by Hoover in 2018, "Verity" has sold millions of copies and even topped the New York Times Bestseller's List. The psychological thriller follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh who is hired by Verity's husband Jeremy to finish writing Verity's popular series of novels after a debilitating accident left her unable to complete the series herself. Once Ashleigh moves in with the ailing Verity and her husband, she finds what appears to be an unfinished autobiography that reveals deeply disturbing secrets about the famed novelist.

Michael Showalter ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye") will be in the director's chair, and Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett will respectively play Lowen and Jeremy, whose professional relationship is tested by their mutual attraction to one another. Ismael Cruz Cordova ("The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power"), Irina Dvorovenko ("The Americans"), Lou Martini Jr. ("The Sopranos"), Michael Abbott Jr. ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), K.K. Moggie ("Gotham Knights"), and Brady Wagner (Broadway's "Merrily We Roll Along") co-star in yet to be announced roles.

The cast has been spotted filming in Queens, where Broadway Stages has a facility with more than a dozen stages. "Verity" is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 15, 2026, so mark your calendars.

Ryan Murphy's Kennedy Family Saga "American Love Story" Has a Female Lead

First came Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's anthology series "American Horror Story," which is now up to 12 seasons and includes the spin-off "American Horror Stories." Then came "American Crime Story," which in its three seasons has told the stories of the O.J. Simpson murder trial, the assassination of Gianni Versace, and the Monica Lewinsky White House affair. Then came last year's "American Sports Story" about former New England Patriots tight end and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez.

Now, Murphy's production company is adding a new chapter to the "American Story" franchise — "American Love Story," which in its first season will tell the romantic and tragic tale of John F. Kennedy Jr. (widely known as John-John) and Carolyn Bessette. Broadway Stages previously provided facilities for Murphy's series "Pose" (2018-2021) and his miniseries "Halston" (2021), and now we are home to two of his upcoming productions, with both "American Love Story" and "The Beauty" now filming at our Brooklyn facilities.

So far, half of the couple has been cast, with Sarah Pidgeon ("The Wilds") set to star as the fashion publicist Bessette who married John-John in 1996. Tragically, three years later the couple died in a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard.

Pidgeon made her Broadway debut last year in "Stereophonic," which earned a record 13 Tony Award nominations and won Best Play. She earned a nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role as Diana, the vocalist for a rock band consisting of several feuding couples.

As we find out more casting information, we will be sure to let you know.

Austin Butler's "Caught Stealing" Coming This Summer

Mark August 29 on your calendar if you are excited to see Austin Butler's next big screen performance. Butler stars in Darren Aronofsky's upcoming adaptation of Charlie Huston's 2004 novel "Caught Stealing." The action thriller utilized five of the stages in our Brooklyn facility during a 51-day shoot last fall.

Butler will star as Hank Thompson, a washed-out former professional baseball player who gets inadvertently caught up with the mafia in 1990s New York City. The film has a large ensemble cast that includes Oscar winner Regina King, Zoë Kravitz, Matt Smith, Liev Schreiber, Vincent D'Onofrio, Carol Kane, Will Brill, Griffin Dunne, D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, George Abud, and rappers Bad Bunny and Action Bronson.

"Caught Stealing" is the first in Huston's "Henry Thompson" book trilogy, and he is adapting the screenplay himself. Huston is no stranger to screenwriting, as he previously wrote three episodes of Fox's hit series "Gotham" and served as a producer for its fourth and fifth seasons.

The upcoming crime thriller got some buzz at Las Vegas's CinemaCon last week. Aronofsky, who is known for directing dark, surreal films like "Pi" (1998) and "Requiem for a Dream" (2000), unveiled the first-look teaser trailer at the annual gathering of cinema owners and Hollywood studios.

We can't wait to check out "Caught Stealing" when it comes to theaters later this summer!

Stars Will Realign for "Elsbeth" Season Two Finale Next Month

Nine guest stars from the first two seasons of "Elsbeth" will return for the season two finale scheduled to air on May 8 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. The popular whodunit took a brief break during March Madness but returned last week with a new episode called "Hot Tub Crime Machine," guest starring Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds") as a decluttering guru.

Only four more episodes of the season remain, but a third season has already been greenlit by CBS, so the quirky attorney-turned-investigator Elsbeth Tascioni (Carrie Preston) isn't going anywhere.

The season finale will be titled "Ramen Holiday," and Elsbeth will come face to face with many familiar suspects while trying to solve a murder, according to the episode logline. Parker is listed among the returning guest stars for the finale, along with season one guests Stephen Moyer (who played a theater professor/director in the pilot episode), Retta (who played a well-respected and wealthy matchmaker), Gina Gershon (who played a driven and successful plastic surgeon), Elizabeth Lail (who played a tech CEO hyping a crime-reporting app), Arian Moayed (who played a bartender at an upscale cocktail bar), and André De Shields (who played a legendary fashion designer in the season finale). Second season guest star Alyssa Milano (who played a former mafia princess now running a family restaurant) will also return for the finale.

The upcoming 17th episode of the season, "Four Body Problem," is scheduled to air on April 10. Tony-Award winner David Alan Grier ("A Soldier's Play") will guest star as the owner of a historic mortuary for the elite. Ethan Slater ("Wicked") will also debut as a new officer partnered with Elsbeth, and he will then return for the season finale.

Second City New York Hosts Summer Comedy Camp

A little over a year ago, Chicago's Second City comedy troupe expanded into New York, taking residence in a Williamsburg venue owned by one of Broadway Stages' affiliates. Over the last six decades, Second City has launched the careers of countless comedians, and its Chicago and Toronto venues helped shape their respective communities.

The troupe's newest venue has already enriched the Brooklyn community in so many ways. On top of providing laughs, last October the comedy troupe held a fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. In its latest venture, this summer Second City New York will host a comedy camp in its Williamsburg facility for budding performers between the ages of 10 and 18. Each session will run for a week, with four sessions running from July 7 through August 1. Campers will learn all about improvisation, storytelling, and comedy writing while honing the skills needed to be successful in comedy and the performing arts.

Click here to find out more about the summer camp.

Second City New York's theater space in Williamsburg was once a record shop and club. Today, it is a 12,000 square-foot bustling facility that includes a 200-seat mainstage, 60-seat second stage, several classrooms, and a restaurant.

In this edition, we take in the Hudson River Museum, where art, science, and history converge.

At Broadway Stages, we've witnessed how New York City's iconic landmarks and stunning locations enhance a production's authenticity. One such location featured in the hit TV show "Long Bright River" is the Hudson River Museum, in Yonkers. This popular filming spot added a unique, atmospheric backdrop to the drama starring Amanda Seyfried, set against the complex opioid crisis narrative. If you're a fan of the show or love exploring local treasures, you will want to add this to your agenda.

In addition to its permanent collection, it hosts rotating shows that feature contemporary art and thought-provoking learning encounters. The museum’s website says of one of Bill Viola’s works: "‘Moving Stillness: Mount Ranier 1979 offers a mesmerizing exploration of nature's cycles of renewal, enveloping viewers in a contemplative and transformative experience.” And next month, "Lens on the Hudson: Photographs by Joseph Squillante” opens. It “celebrates Squillante's golden anniversary by highlighting his intersection with the environmental movements that gained momentum along the river in the 1970s and continue today.”

Service and Hospitality at the Hudson River Museum

Many reviewers highlight the staff, who are known for their expertise and warm hospitality. According to a Google review, "The gentleman who ran the show had the perfect voice for the show. His voice sounded soothing and made me feel the awe and majesty of what we were looking at. I loved the bits of humor that were also part of the show. In an interview with American Cinematographer, he talked about what he looks for in a camera operator now: "If I'm hiring a camera operator, he has to be able to fulfill his primary function, but I also want that person to be able to help the assistant get everything put together properly, anticipate any problems that might arise, and so on…. April 29 NYC Public School Film Festival: Showcasing the Next Generation of Filmmakers

At Broadway Stages, we understand film festivals' pivotal role in driving creativity and innovation within the film industry. These events provide a platform for independent filmmakers to showcase their work, often serving as the first step toward gaining recognition and distribution. Film festivals foster connections among industry professionals, creating opportunities for collaboration that align with our mission to support storytelling and production excellence. As a cornerstone of the film community, Broadway Stages is proud to highlight initiatives that promote cultural exchange and fuel the growth of the industry we love. Today, we tell you about the 7th Annual NYC DOE/MOME Public School Film Festival.

Shining a Spotlight on the Next Generation of Filmmakers

Film festivals play a vital role in shaping the future of the entertainment industry. They provide a stage for new voices, encourage innovation, and help launch careers in film and television. In New York City, a global epicenter for media production, supporting young talent is crucial to maintaining the city's legacy as a creative powerhouse. The 7th Annual NYC DOE/MOME Public School Film Festival does exactly that — offering public school students the opportunity to showcase their work, gain industry exposure, and connect with professionals who can help shape their futures.

Celebrating Student Filmmakers in New York City

The NYC Public School Film Festival (NYCPSFF) was founded through a partnership between the New York City Department of Education and the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME). This annual event highlights the creative achievements of middle and high school students across the city, providing a rare opportunity for young filmmakers to screen their work in a professional setting.

Since its inception, the festival has grown in prominence, attracting attention from industry leaders and established filmmakers who understand the importance of fostering emerging talent. Past festivals have featured student films across various genres, from documentary and narrative fiction to experimental and animation. The festival offers these students a platform and introduces them to the wider world of professional filmmaking. The festival's growth and prominence are a testament to the talent and potential of the young filmmakers it supports.

What to Expect at the 7th Annual NYC Public School Film Festival

This year, the festival will take place on April 29, 2025, at the renowned Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens. It will feature multiple screenings, panels, and networking opportunities designed to engage both filmmakers and attendees.

Why the NYCPSFF Matters

The festival is more than just a showcase — it's an important stepping stone for students hoping to enter the film industry. Many past participants have gone on to pursue degrees in filmmaking and internships with major studios.

MOME has consistently emphasized the festival's role in making the entertainment industry more accessible to students from diverse backgrounds. In a past statement, Anne del Castillo, a senior policy advisor for the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, said, "Not only does this festival give talented young filmmakers a chance to showcase their work, but the career expo and panel offer a chance to learn about jobs in the industry from some of the most successful and interesting people in the business."

Moreover, former NYC Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza said of the inaugural festival, "The skills our students learn in the arts help them thrive in and out of the classroom, and this festival will give talented young filmmakers an unprecedented opportunity to showcase their work for leaders and trailblazers in the industry."

Production Spotlight | Marvel's "Daredevil: Born Again"

Charlie Cox has returned to the small screen for another turn as Daredevil, AKA Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer by day and a vigilante crime fighter with superhuman senses by night.

Marvel legend Stan Lee and comic book artist Bill Everett introduced the character in April 1964. Five decades later, Cox first donned the red mask to star in Netflix's adaptation of the beloved comic book, simply called "Daredevil." The show premiered in April 2015 and concluded after three seasons, but Cox continued to make occasional appearances as Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), showing up in several episodes of the Disney+ hit "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" and the 2024 miniseries "Echo."

On March 4, the superhero returned in the new Disney+ show "Daredevil: Born Again" with much of the same cast from when Netflix's "Daredevil" last aired in 2018. Another thing that has not changed is its ties to New York City. Both "Daredevil" and "Daredevil: Born Again" include scenes filmed at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility on Staten Island, which is part of our 69-acre waterfront campus that has been redesigned as a full-service production facility.

The first season of "Daredevil: Born Again" will include nine episodes, with Disney+ releasing new ones on Tuesday nights through April 15. An eight-episode second season is now filming and expected to be released in 2026.

The new series continues several years after the Netflix show left off. Murdock has given up crime fighting and is still practicing law alongside his friends Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) and Franklin "Foggy" Nelson (Elden Henson). Power-hungry former crime boss Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), AKA Kingpin, is out of prison and running a successful campaign to become the city's next mayor. Other cast members reprising their roles from the Netflix series include Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, AKA Punisher; Wilson Bethel as Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter, AKA Bullseye; Ayelet Zurer as Fisk's wife Vanessa; and Susan Varon as the owner of Josie's Bar.

"Daredevil: Born Again" introduced several new characters and cast members in the first episode released on March 4. Murdock has a new law partner, former Assistant District Attorney Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James), and a potential new love interest in therapist Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva). BB Urich (Genneya Walton), the niece of Ben Urich who Fisk killed in "Daredevil," is introduced as a reporter with her own news show, "The BB Report." Cherry (Clark Johnson) is a recently retired police officer who works as an investigator with Murdock. Sheila Rivera (Zabryna Guevara) is the director of Fisk's mayoral campaign, and Buck Cashman (Arty Froushan) and Daniel Blake (Michael Gandolfini) are two of his closest staffers.

The second episode is dedicated to actor Kamar de los Reyes, who posthumously debuts in the MCU as the crime-fighting vigilante Hector Ayala, AKA White Tiger. Appearing in three episodes, Ayala becomes Murdock's client when he is put on trial for murder after breaking up a fight in the subway.

The show garnered 7.5 million views in its first five days streaming on Disney+ and has been met with positive reviews from critics and viewers alike.

"Daredevil: Born Again" and the original "Daredevil" (2015-2018) are not the only MCU productions that have utilized Broadway Stages' facilities. Netflix's "Iron Fist" (2017-2018), "The Punisher" (2017-2019), "Jessica Jones" (2015-2019), "Luke Cage" (2016-2018), and 2017 miniseries "The Defenders" also include scenes filmed at Broadway Stages.

Matt Corman, Chris Ord, and Dario Scardapane are the masterminds who created the latest incarnation of the Daredevil story, with Scardapane also serving as showrunner. He previously performed double duty as a producer and writer for "The Punisher." Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead serve as lead directors. Both are experienced working within the MCU, having directed episodes of the 2022 "Moon Knight" miniseries and the Disney+ hit "Loki" (2021-2023).

Kingsland Wildflowers: How Broadway Stages and an Eco-Team Created a Thriving Green Oasis in Brooklyn

Broadway Stages and Kingsland Wildflowers: A Green Space for Community and Sustainability

At Broadway Stages, we are committed to making our community better and protecting the environment. A testament to that commitment is our relationship with local eco-focused organizations that helped to create (and maintain) Kingsland Wildflowers, a beautiful green roof and community space in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This project is an example of how unused industrial areas can be turned into thriving natural habitats. Not only do they help the environment, but they bring people together to learn, explore, and enjoy nature in the city.

How Kingsland Wildflowers Began and Why It Matters

Kingsland Wildflowers was founded in 2016 with a simple but powerful idea: to transform an empty rooftop into a green space filled with plants, insects, and wildlife. This green roof is home to native flowers and pollinators, helping support biodiversity in an urban setting. The space also offers breathtaking views of Manhattan and the nearby industrial landscape, giving visitors a peaceful and unique experience.

This project helps expand green corridors in New York City, which are essential for birds, bees, and other wildlife. It also shows how rooftops can be repurposed to improve air quality, reduce heat, and manage stormwater. By turning rooftops into gardens, we are creating a model for other urban spaces to follow.

Our Eco-Team and Their Roles

Kingsland Wildflowers is a success because of the teamwork between several dedicated organizations. Each partner plays an important role in making this project thrive:

●        Broadway Stages: As one of New York's largest film and television production studio companies, we provided the rooftop at 520 Kingsland Avenue for the project. In addition to donating more than 24K square feet of space, we invested $2.5 million to build the green rooftop and also invest in its maintenance and educational programs. Our commitment to sustainability and community engagement continues to drive this project forward.

●        Alive Structures: This woman-owned landscaping company specializes in green roofs and ecological gardens. Alive Structures, which inspired Kingsland Wildflowers, designed and installed the green roof, carefully selecting native plants to support local wildlife and improve environmental health.

●        Newtown Creek Alliance (NCA): This organization works to restore, reveal, and revitalize Newtown Creek and the surrounding environment. NCA manages the educational programming at Kingsland Wildflowers, hosts community events, and promotes environmental awareness.

●        NOoSPHERE Arts: This nonprofit arts organization joined the project in 2018. Founded by artist Sol Kjøk, NOoSPHERE Arts brings creative programming to Kingsland Wildflowers, blending art with environmental education. They host cultural events that inspire people to connect with nature through art.

A Green Roof Funded by Community Support

In 2015, Alive Structures brought together Broadway Stages, NYC  Audubon (now known as the NYC Bird Alliance), and NCA to apply for a Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund (GCEF) grant. This grant awarded $1 million over three years to help build a 24,000-square-foot green roof designed to support birds, bees, and pollinators.

Thanks to Broadway Stages' initial  $2.5 million investment and continued financial support, Kingsland Wildflowers has continued to grow. Today, the green roof has expanded by another 30,000 square feet, creating an even larger space for plants, birds, and people to enjoy. Alive Structures continues to maintain the garden, ensuring it remains a thriving habitat for years to come.

Our Goals and What We're Working Towards

The Kingsland Wildflowers project is focused on four key goals:

●        Restoring Natural Habitats: By adding green spaces to the city, we help support local plants and animals, improving biodiversity.

●        Educating the Community: We offer workshops, tours, and events to teach people about sustainability, green roofs, and the importance of protecting nature.

●        Engaging with Local Residents: Our green roof is a place where people can come together, relax, and participate in environmental projects.

●        Promoting Urban Sustainability: Green roofs help reduce pollution, control rainwater runoff, and lower city temperatures, making our urban spaces healthier for everyone.

Events, Classes, and Volunteer Opportunities

Kingsland Wildflowers is more than just a green space — it's a hub for education and community engagement. Throughout the year, we offer a variety of events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities, including:

●        Educational Workshops: Learn about native plants, pollinators, bird conservation, and sustainable gardening practices.

●        Community Events: Join us for festivals, live performances, and art installations hosted in collaboration with NOoSPHERE Arts.

●        Guided Tours: Explore the green roof with expert-led tours highlighting its ecological importance and breathtaking city views.

●        Volunteer Days: Get your hands dirty by helping with gardening, habitat restoration, and maintenance projects to keep Kingsland Wildflowers thriving.

Check out Kingsland Wildflower's Events page and Facebook and Instagram pages for the latest event schedules and volunteer sign-ups. We encourage you to join us and be a part of this exciting project!

At Broadway Stages, we believe in creating a greener, healthier city for everyone. Kingsland Wildflowers is a perfect example of how we can work together to build sustainable spaces that benefit both people and nature. We are proud of what we've accomplished with our amazing eco-team, and we look forward to continuing this work in the years ahead.

Together, we can make our city greener, one rooftop at a time!

Industry Insider Profile | Nikki Toscano

Nikki Toscano: The Visionary Behind "Long Bright River" and Today's Most Compelling TV

At Broadway Stages, we provide filmmakers and television creators with the ideal environment to bring their visions to life. As one of New York's premier production studio facilities, we offer state-of-the-art resources that attract top-tier talent. Nikki Toscano is one of those talents. As the showrunner, writer, and executive producer of "Long Bright River," she delivers an emotionally gripping, socially relevant drama that is as timely as it is riveting. Based on Liz Moore's bestselling novel, the Peacock original series, starring Amanda Seyfried, offers a raw, unfiltered look at addiction, family, and crime in Philadelphia. Toscano's career is a testament to bold storytelling, and "Long Bright River" cements her as one of television's most essential creative forces.

Nikki Toscano's Rise to Hollywood Powerhouse

Nikki Toscano's journey to becoming one of TV's most sought-after showrunners wasn't a straight line. She started as a writer on hit procedural dramas before making a name for herself on acclaimed series like "Revenge” and "Bates Motel." Her ability to craft complex characters and tension-filled narratives quickly set her apart in the industry.

Her defining moment came when she co-showran Amazon Prime Video's "Hunters," a gripping Nazi-hunting thriller starring Al Pacino. The series, a blend of historical fiction and action-packed storytelling, proved Toscano's ability to balance weighty themes with high-stakes drama. She followed that success with "The Offer," the Paramount+ limited series about the behind-the-scenes drama of "The Godfather." The show underscored her knack for exploring Hollywood's most iconic moments with depth and authenticity.

Toscano's storytelling prowess is on full display in "Long Bright River." The series isn't just another crime drama — it's a deeply personal, emotionally-charged narrative that examines the opioid crisis through the eyes of two sisters: Mickey, a police officer, and Kacey, a struggling addict. The show combines riveting suspense with an unflinching look at the realities of addiction, making it one of the year's most anticipated series. It's a story that will truly resonate with viewers on an emotional level.

Inside "Long Bright River": A Deeply Personal Crime Drama

"Long Bright River" takes viewers to the heart of Philadelphia, where Mickey searches for Kacey amid an opioid epidemic that has devastated their community. The cinematography highlights both the stark beauty and the grittiness of the streets, enhancing the emotional weight of the story. As Mickey investigates a string of murders, the show masterfully intertwines a gripping police procedural with an emotional family drama.

“I loved the juxtaposition of the love story between the two sisters against the murder mystery and the fact that, sort of in order to figure out who this killer was and what might have happened to her sister, Mickey was forced sort of [to] reflect on their respective paths together,” Toscano said in a recent Script Magazine interview with Sadie Dean. Read the full interview, in which Toscano discusses various aspects of her work on “Long Bright River,” including her collaboration with author and co-creator Liz Moore.

Toscano's adaptation captures the essence of Moore's novel while adding fresh layers to the story. The show does not shy away from the harsh realities of addiction, instead it offers a nuanced portrayal that avoids stereotypes. The narrative unfolds with a tense, slow-burn mystery while delving into the emotional complexities of sisterhood, trauma, and resilience.

The Toscano Method: Crafting Stories That Resonate

Toscano's approach to storytelling is all about authenticity. She is known for creating rich, immersive worlds that feel genuine and lived-in, whether she's depicting 1970s Hollywood or the streets of contemporary Philadelphia. Her ability to blend high-stakes drama with effective storytelling makes her one of the most exciting creative minds in the industry today.

For "Long Bright River," Toscano worked closely with author Liz Moore to maintain the novel's raw emotional core. She also collaborated with local advocates, law enforcement, and individuals affected by addiction to ensure the series' depiction of the crisis was both respectful and real. This dedication to authenticity sets her work apart.

Her production style is equally meticulous. Toscano fosters a collaborative environment where actors, writers, and crew members thrive, ensuring every aspect of a show — dialogue, cinematography, pacing — aligns with the story's emotional truth. She believes television should do more than entertain; it should provoke thought, spark conversations, and create lasting impact.

Why "Long Bright River" Is a Must-Watch

At Broadway Stages, we are honored to support Nikki Toscano's creative vision and celebrate her impact on the television industry. "Long Bright River" is more than just a crime series — it's a story that stays with you, challenging perceptions and stirring emotions long after the final credits roll. Toscano's ability to turn complex, real-world issues into must-watch television is why she's among the vital voices in the industry today.

With its compelling mystery, rich character development, and unflinching social commentary, "Long Bright River" is poised to be one of the most talked-about series of the year. The show's exploration of addiction, family bonds, and the pursuit of justice makes it both timely and deeply resonant. It's a show that will keep you engaged and connected to the pressing issues of our time.

Don't miss "Long Bright River," streaming now on Peacock. It's a powerful, gripping drama that you won't want to miss. Watch it, talk about it, and experience Nikki Toscano's storytelling brilliance firsthand.

NY State Film Production Tax Extension and Enhancement

The New York state budget proposal includes enhancements and the expansion of the NY Film and Production Tax Credit that will help save the endangered film and TV industry and serve to stimulate the economy with living wage jobs. This program is an essential component of our industry’s success and a critical driver of economic activity across NY.

Achieving consistent and sustainable industry growth, remaining competitive and maintaining our leadership position as the most influential metropolis and state in the nation requires competitive tax credits to offset film production tax credits that are in place across the globe. We cannot risk losing productions to other states and/or countries.

A report sponsored by the NYS Empire State Development covering 2021-2022 finds that for every $1 of the current film production tax credit:

  • $1.70 of state and local government tax revenue is generated

  • $13.80 is added to the State’s GDP; and

  • $23.90 of additional real economic output is created.

Law & Order: Organized Crime – Season 4 May 2024

The film and television industry supports thousands of small businesses from caterers and equipment rental companies to local vendors, construction crews, and hospitality services. Every production that films in our studios requires a crew of up to 250 or more individuals, each of whom helps to generate direct, indirect and induced economic impact. When a production spends time filming in our studios, it is our neighboring local businesses and residents who benefit.  The film and television industry embraces the cultural diversity, characteristics and authenticity that make our communities unique. From Albany to Yonkers, NY serves as the perfect backdrop!

Chaos ensues when a confused, elderly woman crashes a party at a Hollywood couple's upscale home. An ensemble cast of Pedro Pascal, Walton Goggins, Lois Smith, Elizabeth Reaser, Eva De Dominici, and Rufus Sewell star in writer and director Nadia Conners' first narrative feature, "The Uninvited," which has been generating positive buzz since debuting at last year's South by Southwest (SXSW) Film & TV Festival.

"Materialists" (June 13)

In 2023, Celine Song broke onto the movie scene with a debut that most filmmakers can only dream of. She wrote and directed "Past Lives," which won over audiences and earned Academy Award nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Song is following up her highly successful feature film debut with the new romcom "Materialists," starring Dakota Johnson as a New York City matchmaker caught in a love triangle with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal.

"Elio" (June 20)

Pixar's latest feature film will follow a space-obsessed boy named Elio who finds himself beamed up on a spaceship and then mistaken by aliens as an ambassador for Earth. Two of the three directors of "Elio" are women — Madeline Sharafian, who earned an Oscar nomination for 2020's animated short "Burrow," and Domee Shi, who won an Oscar for directing the 2018 animated short "Bao" and directed Pixar's critically acclaimed 2022 feature "Turning Red." Adrian Molina, who co-directed Pixar's award-winning feature "Coco," wrote the script and is co-directing.

"Freakier Friday" (August 8)

Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are back for more fun in a sequel to 2003's body-switching comedy "Freaky Friday." Numerous cast members from the original will return, including Rosalind Chao, Chad Michael Murray, and Mark Harmon. New cast members include Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Vanessa Bayer. Nisha Ganatra, known primarily for her television work, is in the director's chair, working from a script by relative newcomer Jordan Weiss.

"The Bride!" (September 26)

Maggie Gyllenhaal has seamlessly transitioned from Oscar-nominated actress to award-winning director and screenwriter over the past few years. In 2021, she made her feature film directorial debut with the critically acclaimed drama "The Lost Daughter." The film earned three Academy Award nominations including Best Adapted Screenplay for Gyllenhaal. She is following up that effort with a musical adaptation of "Frankenstein" starring Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Penélope Cruz, and Annette Bening. The cast of "The Bride!" also includes her husband Peter Sarsgaard and brother Jake Gyllenhaal.

"Five Nights at Freddy's 2" (December 5)

Emma Tammi directed and co-wrote the highly successful 2023 horror film "Five Nights at Freddy's," based on the video game of the same name. The film made nearly $300 million on a $20 million budget, and Tammi is returning to direct its sequel, which she also co-wrote. Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard will all reprise their roles from the first film.

Coming Later

Several women had films premiere at January's Sundance Film Festival and this month's SXSW Film & TV Festival. "Atropia," the directorial feature debut of writer and director Hailey Gates, won the highly coveted Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Eva Victor is earning rave reviews for writing, directing, and starring in "Sorry, Baby," which also premiered at Sundance. A24 won the bidding war over distribution of the critically acclaimed film, though no release date is set yet. Mary Bronstein's "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You" also premiered at the festival to critical acclaim, with particular praise for actress Rose Byrne's leading performance. Director and writer Amy Wang is generating buzz for her feature "Slanted," which debuted at SXSW. Other notable SXSW premieres included Julia Max's horror film "The Surrender," Amy Landecker's romcom "For Worse," and "The Astronaut," a thriller written and directed by Jess Varley.

Scarlett Johansson will soon be making her feature directorial debut with "Eleanor the Great," a dramedy starring June Squibb as a 90-year-old trying to move on after the death of her best friend of seven decades. The Oscar-nominated actress of 2013's "Nebraska" and star of last year's "Thelma" will be joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Hecht, and Erin Kellyman. Newcomer Tory Kamen wrote the screenplay, which was loosely inspired by her grandmother's move from Florida to Manhattan at the age of 95.

Kathryn Bigelow has a very secretive film project coming this fall. The latest feature from the Oscar-winning director of 1991's "Point Break," 2009's "The Hurt Locker," and 2012's "Zero Dark Thirty" will star Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson, but the plot and even the name of the film are being kept under wraps.

Lynne Ramsay has been quiet for nearly a decade, but the writer and director of 2011's psychological drama "We Need to Talk About Kevin" is making up for lost time with two films currently in post-production. Jennifer Lawrence will star as a woman in a remote part of Montana struggling to maintain her sanity as her marriage disintegrates in "Die, My Love." Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek will co-star. Ramsay's other film on the horizon is "Polaris," which takes place in Alaska during the late 19th century and stars Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara.

Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao has a new historical drama film in the works. The director and writer of 2020's "Nomadland" and 2021's "Eternals" is adapting Maggie O'Farrell's 2020 novel "Hamnet," a fictional take on the lives of William Shakespeare and his wife following the death of their young son Hamnet. Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley will play the grieving playwright and his wife.

Another film generating a lot of buzz is "Rental Family," a dramedy directed and co-written by Hikari, who is known for directing several episodes of Netflix's award-winning limited series "Beef." Brendan Fraser plays a struggling actor who is hired by a Japanese rental company to play various roles in the lives of clients. The film co-stars Mari Yamamoto, Takehiro Hira, and Akira Emoto.

Writer and director Nia DaCosta is adapting Henrik Ibsen's 1891 play "Hedda Gabler" for the big screen. Tessa Thompson will star as Hedda, a manipulative newlywed in a loveless marriage. Other stars of "Hedda" will include Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nina Hoss, and Nicholas Pinnock. DaCosta is known for directing and co-writing 2021's hit horror film "Candyman" and 2023's "The Marvels." She is also attached to direct the upcoming post-apocalyptic horror sequel "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," which is expected to be released next year.

Speaking of 2026, Greta Gerwig will follow up her 2023 blockbuster "Barbie" with a highly anticipated film adaptation of "The Chronicles of Narnia" for Netflix. Rumors are swirling about who will be among the cast, but nothing seems to be confirmed just yet.

Emerald Fennell, the director and Oscar-winning writer of "Promising Young Woman," is writing, directing, and producing an adaptation of Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights" starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi that is scheduled for release next year. Her most recent release was 2023's dark comedy "Saltburn," which co-starred Elordi.

Looking ahead, "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins is hard at work on the script for the much-delayed next feature film in the "Star Wars" universe, titled "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron," which she will also be directing. The film has been in development since 2020.
